Sergio Larrain a traversé la planète photographique tel une météorite. Son souci de pureté, son attrait pour la méditation, l’on conduit à s’isoler, après de nombreux voyages, en autarcie dans la campagne chilienne. De là il écrivait beaucoup, soucieux de la nécessité de faire évoluer la planète vers une prise de conscience générale, tout en continuant à aimer profondément la photographie. Sa pratique se limitait alors à quelques satori,
purs moments d’éblouissements.

Dans un article annonçant la mort du photographe dans Le Monde, en février 2012, Michel Guerrin écrivait : « Sergio Larrain photographie en noir et blanc, dans la rue surtout. Il découpe la lumière de telle façon qu’il donne l’impression que les jours sont plongés dans la nuit. Les gens sont comme des apparitions fantomatiques.

Il prend des libertés rares pour embarquer le spectateur dans des compositions audacieuses et virtuoses, charnelles et bousculées, comme si on se trouvait sur un navire qui tangue : plongées, contreplongées, perspectives profondes, flous au premier plan, découpe violente de la lumière… »

Les photographies de Sergio Larrain n’ont fait l’objet que de quatre livres de son vivant, et jamais aucune monographie complète n’a été publiée sur son travail. C’était son choix. Cet ouvrage, publié sous la direction d’Agnès Sire qui a entretenu une longue correspondance avec lui et oeuvré, avec Magnum, à la préservation de son patrimoine photographique, vient combler ce manque. Deux grands axes dans cette monographie, l’Amérique latine et l’Europe : Le Machu Picchu, la Bolivie, le Chili, Valparaiso, Londres, Paris, l’Italie… une sélection de plus de 200 photographies.

Mais cet ouvrage ne serait pas fidèle à cette personnalité hors du commun, si n’étaient pas reproduites quelques lettres essentielles, des dessins, des carnets de travail et quelques textes de sa main destinés à la méditation.
