Attention les eaux montent ! Arko Datto est un photographe, né en 1986 en Inde, dont les images interrogent l’état de notre monde. Où irons-nous lorsque la dernière vague nous frappera est son quatrième livre. Dans un format oblong vertical, des images nocturnes aux couleurs irradiées sont placées en haut de page comme si elles étaient montées sur pilotis. Au grès des doubles pages – et peut-être des marées –, les images s’abaissent puis remontent. Le livre n’est relié que dans sa partie haute, par une ficelle rudimentaire cousue en trois points seulement. Les bas des pages sont marqués par des traces d’humidité boueuse. L’ouvrage traduit, avec une grande intelligence formelle, les effets du réchauffement climatique sur l’environnement hydrique du Delta du Gange. Il annonce ce qui nous attend.
Watch out, the waters are rising! Arko Datto is a photographer, born in India in 1986, whose images question the state of our world. Where Do We Go When the Final Wave Hits is his fourth book. In an oblong vertical format, nocturnal images in irradiated colors are placed at the top of the page, as if mounted on stilts. Across the spreads—and perhaps following the tides—the images move downward and then rise again. The book is bound only along its upper edge, with a rudimentary string sewn through just three points. The bottoms of the pages bear traces of muddy moisture. With remarkable formal intelligence, the book conveys the effects of climate change on the aquatic environment of the Ganges Delta. It announces what lies ahead for us.
