L’activité artistique de John Coplans (1920-2003) s’inscrit dans une existence faite de ruptures radicales et de profondes continuités. Après une enfance partagée entre Londres et l’Afrique du Sud, il s’engage à l’âge de dix-sept ans dans l’armée britannique et combat jusqu’à la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Dans les années 1950, il étudie l’art à Paris puis à Londres, où il pratique ensuite une peinture abstraite. À l’âge de quarante ans, John Coplans part pour les États-Unis, où il devient critique d’art, commissaire d’expositions, directeur de musées. Co-fondateur en 1962 de la célèbre revue Artforum, il joue un rôle essentiel dans le débat artistique des années 1960-1970. En 1980, il débute, à soixante ans, une œuvre photographique dont son propre corps devient la seule matière, et qu’il poursuit jusqu’à sa mort.

Jean-François Chevrier, qui fut l’interlocuteur et l’ami de John Coplans – ils se rencontrèrent en 1984 -, propose une “biographie artistique” dans laquelle l’art est au fondement d’un mode d’existence et d’un rapport au monde. Cet essai, à la fois érudit et non-académique, est accompagné d’un cahier d’une cinquantaine de reproductions, œuvres (et documents) de Coplans mais aussi d’autres artistes dont s’est nourri son travail. Il est suivi d’un choix de textes de l’artiste, écrits entre 1965 et 1991, qui donnent un aperçu représentatif de son activité de critique et éclairent sa propre pratique artistique. Une bibliographie et une chronologie complètent ce panorama sans équivalent de l’activité de John Coplans.

Biographie

Historien de l’art, critique d’art, Jean-François Chevrier a enseigné aux Beaux-arts de Paris de 1988 à 2019. Fondateur et rédacteur en chef de la revue Photographies (1982-1985), conseiller général pour la documenta X (1997), il est commissaire d’expositions indépendant depuis 1988 (Une autre objectivitéPhoto-KunstWalker Evans & Dan Graham, Des territoires, L’Art moderne selon MallarméFormes biographiques…). Il a publié de nombreux essais et ouvrages sur l’art moderne et actuel, photographie comprise. Ouvrages récents : Jeff Wall (Hazan, 2013), Œuvre et activité. La question de l’art (L’Arachnéen, 2015), Bernard Réquichot (Flammarion, 2019).
