À la fin des années 1970, Henri Cartier-Bresson et son éditeur Robert Delpire décident de réaliser un livre qui reprendrait l’ensemble de sa carrière sous le titre Henri Cartier-Bresson Photographe.
Depuis sa première publication il y a plus de quarante ans, cet ouvrage a été traduit en sept langues, réédité onze fois et est considéré comme la référence incontournable du maître.
À travers ce corpus qui rassemble 155 images prises entre 1926 et 1978, celui que l’on a souvent appelé « l’oeil du siècle » nous présente sa vision intime d’un monde dont il a parcouru tous les paysages, rencontré tous les acteurs – artistes, écrivains, anonymes –, et dont il a immortalisé les événements historiques majeurs.

Cartier-Bresson considérait son appareil photo comme le prolongement de son oeil – ce qui souligne son talent inégalé à composer spontanément une image capable d’évoquer le mystère, l’humour et l’universalité des personnes et des moments capturés par son objectif.
Certaines de ses photographies, telle « Près de la gare Saint-Lazare », sont devenues des icônes, étudiées dans les lycées, et sont considérées comme des chefs-d’oeuvre de l’art du 20e siècle.
