Elles sont bien étranges ces créatures qui peuplent les photographies des amateurs à la fin du XIXe siècle. À cette époque, des ouvrages entiers proposent aux opérateurs du dimanche de s’amuser avec la photographie. Sous l’appellation de « récréations photographiques », ils offrent toute une gamme de petits trucs qui vont de la simple surimpression au photomontage le plus raffiné, et permettent aux amateurs d’élaborer des images aussi inquiétantes que désopilantes. L’effet est garanti et le succès au rendez-vous. Au début du XXe siècle, cette imagerie ludique gagne l’imaginaire visuel du grand public : elle envahit alors le cinématographe, la presse illustrée, la carte postale et la photographie foraine. Dans les années 1920 et 1930, les récréations investissent un nouveau champ : celui de l’art.

Des artistes aussi importants que Man Ray, László Moholy-Nagy, André Kertész, Berenice Abbott, Claude Cahun, ou Henri Cartier-Bresson s’emparent de ces techniques récréatives pour les transformer en propositions résolument créatives. Dans cet ouvrage passionnant, Clément Chéroux retrace sur près d’un demi-siècle la fascinante histoire du jeu en photographie. Fruit d’une recherche de près de vingt ans, ce livre novateur révèle un pan méconnu de l’histoire de la photographie. Accompagné d’une surprenante iconographie de près de 300 images, il contribue à réécrire une page importante de l’histoire du Modernisme.
