The artist Balarama Heller was raised in the Hare Krishna movement in the United States. For Sacred Place, he traveled to India, particularly to Vrindavan, a city associated with Krishna, to immerse himself in these landscapes of faith, memory, and inner quest. His series of images forms an intimate photographic pilgrimage—an exploration of the idea of a sacred place through his own journey and roots.
Taken at dawn, his photographs capture moments when the boundary between the material world and the spiritual world is most permeable. Printed in seven colors, the 60 images that make up the book invite a contemplative reading, where colors and forms interact in tension to evoke an almost dreamlike visual language, oscillating between abstraction and recognizable figures.
