In 1963, Paul Strand spent four months in Ghana. He travelled around the country, meeting its inhabitants, conducting interviews and taking hundreds of photographs. He was invited by Kwame Nkrumah, the first president of independent Ghana. On his return, Strand began work on a book project with the British writer Basil Davidson. The book was published in 1976, the year Strand died. Why Ghana? What was Strand looking for there? What did he want to show? The meeting will attempt to answer some of these questions.
Talk with Damarice Amao, doctor of art history, historian of photography, curator at the photography department of the Musée national d’art moderne – Centre Pompidou and exhibition curator, and Clément Chéroux, director of the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson and curator of the exhibition Paul Strand: The Balance of Forces.
The talk will be held in French.
