In 1935 Henri Cartier-Bresson met Helen Levitt in New York. There he exhibited the images he had taken in Mexico during the previous months, and gave a print to his American friend. In 1941, Helen Levitt also went to Mexico City to make photographs of a different kind. Anne Bertrand and Joshua Chuang authors of the exhibition catalogue, discuss the Mexican photographs of the French photographer and the American photographer, exhibited together for the first time in Paris.
An art historian and critic, Anne Bertrand has written Le Présent de Robert Frank (2009), edited Tacita Dean, Écrits choisis 1992-2011 (2011), Lewis Baltz, Textes (2019), as well as Walker Evans, Le Secret de la photographie (2017)/The Interview (2019) and contributed to the catalogue of the exhibition “Wright Morris. The Essence of the Visible” (2019). His critical edition of Walker Evans: Writings and Interviews. An Anthology will be published in spring 2025 by Eakins Press in New York.
Curator and editor Joshua Chuang has served as curator for photography at Yale University Art Gallery, chief curator of the Center for Creative Photography in Tucson, Arizona, and chief curator for photography at the New York Public Library.
