Conversation with Rahim Fortune about his latest book Hardtack (Loose Joints, 2024).
Thursday, May 16, at 7 p.m.
Flour, water, and salt. These are the sole ingredients that make Hardtack: a Civil War-era food long-associated with survivalism, land migration, and its extremely long shelf life. Borrowing from vernacular photography its aesthetics and the metaphor of survival from hardtack, Fortune interrogates the complex and often contradictory relationship between contemporary black communities and the landscapes and traditions of the American South. He is especially interested in coming-of-age traditions and portrays young bull-riders, praise dancers, and pageant queens. He also explores the intergenerational conversation between young people and elders handing down these traditions. Collecting together nearly a decade of work, Hardtack marks an important contribution to photographing the American South.
Rahim Fortune is a visual artist from the Chickasaw Nation of Oklahoma. Fortune’s previous book, I Can’t Stand to See You Cry was exhibited at the Rencontres d’Arles in 2021 and was the recipient of the Louis Roederer Discovery Award in 2022. Fortune’s work explores shifting geographies of migration and the way these histories are written in the landscapes of the American South.
The event will be held in English and will be followed by a book signing session.
Tickets must be purchased through the online ticket service.
